Thermal power plants (including thermal power plants that use fissile materials or burn coal, oil or natural gas) and general heat engines do not convert all thermal energy into electrical energy. In most heat engines, slightly more than half of the heat is lost as excess heat (see: the second law of thermodynamics and Carnot’s theorem). By capturing the excess heat, combined heat and power (CHP) uses the heat wasted in conventional power plants.
